Senator Elizabeth Warren Visits Manet, NQ

On Monday, March 13, Manet had the distinct honor to welcome U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren to our North Quincy practice site for a roundtable discussion and tour about the local impact of and efforts to stem the opioid epidemic and the programs that Manet offers to assist those struggling with substance use disorders.

Senator Warren opened the dialogue by acknowledging that health centers are happy, vital places that provide critical services to communities, and she noted the importance of integrating treatment and prevention for substance use disorders into primary care with access to behavioral health options because, she said, "integrated care increases the chance of success."

The dialogue included state senators John Keenen and Walter Timilty, state representatives Tackey Chan and Bruce Ayers, Mayor Thomas Koch, Manet board members, primary care providers, staff and patients and representatives from community organizations, including Bay State Community Services, South Shore Mental Health, Quincy Police Department, South Shore Health System, the Association for Behavioral Healthcare and the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers.

Manet CEO Cynthia Sierra set the scene by explaining the important role that community health centers play nationwide, serving 1 in 7 Medicaid beneficiaries, almost 1 in 3 individuals in poverty and 1 in 5 low income and uninsured, and locally with Manet serving nearly 16,000 patients at five sites in Quincy, Hull and Taunton. She also noted the devastating impact of substance use, noting that three to four people die each day in Massachusetts as a result of the opioid crisis.

"As a health center, we recognize a struggle that touches so many of us – and our staff are at the ready," she said.

Most impactful were the stories from patients Seana and Scott, who receive their primary care at Manet and also participate in Manet's Medication Assisted Treatment program. After years of struggling with addiction, they have both been clean for two years and are the parents of a healthy, happy three-month old boy. Seana says that being able to receive treatment as part of her regular primary care is important to them.

In closing, Senator Warren said that the dialogue underscored the fact that the opioid crisis touches real people. "How grateful I am for the work you all do every day," she said, "You make me proud to be from Massachusetts."

A Message to Patients and Staff from our CEO

At Manet, we proudly serve and openly welcome patients that may have been raised here or have come to the United States from other countries around the world. As well, we are honored to employ the finest staff that have grown up locally and have come to us internationally.

Manet, among the ranks of federally qualified health centers for close to 40 years, exists to provide unfettered access to primary care and supportive services for any individual or family that needs our care.

For our patients, our immigrant community and our staff it may be a concerning, destabilizing and worrisome time with the recent events. We will work together as a team to identify and disseminate additional resources for our patients and as needed additional training for staff. To this end, please reach out to your leaders as you need to—they are in service to you and each other. Further, thank you to our managers and leaders for their sensitivity and attention to these concerns.

In closing, Manet embodies the mission of our founders and the tenets of the National Health Center program continue to ground us.

And, as our inspiration, our core values remain and serve as our guide:

  • We believe that everyone should have access to high quality, comprehensive health care and supportive social services that are delivered in a timely manner, with compassion and understanding regardless of ability to pay.
  • We will assist our patients and their families in achieving their optimal level of health and wellness.
  • We believe we play an important role in reducing health disparities and insuring parity and equality in health care.
